Connect with Your Greatness: The Maths curriculum at Oaktree promotes growth across each of the three journeys, supporting students in developing meaningful connections with themselves, their communities and the world.

Journey 1: Maths is taught under Cognition and Learning, focusing on early developmental steps through real-life, theme-based experiences. Lessons are practical, sensory-rich and highly visual, incorporating colourful objects and movement to engage students. Activities are repetitive, cross-curricular and integrated with art and play to reinforce mathematical concepts. Language development is central, ensuring students build foundational understanding in an accessible and engaging way. Lessons are carefully sequenced to achieve clear, meaningful outcomes by the end of each term.

Journey 2: Maths is tailored to practical learners with diverse needs, following approaches like White Rose Maths and Fluency Bee. Lessons involve concrete and pictorial resources, outdoor activities and interactive tasks to promote engagement. Emphasis is placed on hands-on learning, regularly recapping and checking understanding to ensure progress. Students develop fluency in key skills while building confidence and applying Maths to real-life contexts, such as managing simple transactions or measurements.

Journey 3: focuses on preparing students for adulthood and for exams, such as GCSEs or Entry Levels. Visual and concrete strategies help students progress towards abstract problem-solving. Lessons include interactive starters, quizzes and tasks developing fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills, equipping students for future independence and practical life challenges.

Through these journeys, the Maths curriculum at Oaktree empowers students to connect with their greatness by cultivating curiosity, resilience and a lifelong love of learning. Each journey reflects the school’s commitment to holistic development, ensuring every student thrives academically, socially and emotionally.
